Best Waterfalls In India

India is rich country in heritage, culture and natural resources. It is bound by Himalayas in the north and the eastern and western ghat in the over the east & west peninsular coastline. These hilly terrain is a cradle for many of the waterfalls across India.  During the Monsoon while the water is abundant they display a spectacular and magnificent view which is treating to your eyes. It’s not easy to put together a Top 10 Best Asia Waterfalls List as it’s completely subjective and maybe biased too. If you bid to differ please suggest your choice and I will consider it to be added to the list.
 1. Sivasamudram Falls
The most powerful waterfall in the world (33,000 cubic ft/s). This is a segmented waterfall.
The river branches off into two different streams each of which falls from a dizzy   heights. The western stream is known as Gaganachukki, while the eastern stream is known as Bharachukki. As the water current is strong and gorge is deep, swimming is prohibited.

2. Hogenakkal Waterfall
Hogenakkal Falls is a huge complex of waterfalls in the middle of the Kaveri river in Dharmapuri area in Tamil Nadu. At Hogenakkal, the river drops and creates numerous waterfalls as the water cuts through the rocky terrain which together make a pretty breathtaking view and defintely worth a visit if you are in the area. It is sometimes referred to as the “Niagara of India.

3. Jog Waterfall
The Jog Falls count among the world’s 10 best for sheer magnitude and the second-highest plunge waterfall in India. An astonishing 3.4 million liters of water per second is discharged from a height of 829 feet, which is 40 per cent more than the average flow at Niagara. The river Sharavati pours down in four distinct falls: Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. Visit the falls during monsoon to know the truth behind the jazzy names!!

4. Dudhsagar Falls
Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India’s 5th tallest waterfall and is known for its spetacular view during the Monsoon. One an view the falls very closely during the train journey from Goa to Karnataka. It lies in the border of Karnataka and Goa.

5. Dhuandhar Falls
Dhuandar Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Madhya Pradesh. The river glides through the famous Marble Rocks before plunging down in a waterfall. The plunge creates a bouncing mass of mist which is so powerful that its roar is heard from a far distance and hence the name Dhuandar.

6. Elephant Falls
Elephant Falls located near Shillong where the mountain stream descends through two successive falls over fern-covered rocks. There are 3 waterfalls here namely Wir Phang Falls, Wei Iaplam Falls  and Elephant falls. Though both both Wir and Wei are famous picnic spot around Shillong, the spectacular & voluminous view of the Elephant falls during Monsoon justifies its name. Location: Shillong, Meghalaya 




7. Umbrella Falls
Umbrella Falls is ocated below the Wilson Dam in Bhandardara. The falls is spectacular during the monsoon season while there is abundant water in the Wilson dam. The bridge near the falls gives a close look at the falls for the tourist.  The falls is used for hydro-electric power generation.
Height: 148 feet

.8. Athirapally Falls
Athirapally Falls is the most famous water falls of Kerala and located along Valparai – Chalakudy road is often referred to as the Niagara Falls of India. Just 5 km apart on the road to Valparai is the another picturesque Vazhachal waterfall. These two scintillating waterfalls in thick green forest are a part of the Chalakudy river stream.

9. Abbey Falls
Abbey waterfall is located between private coffee plantations among coffee bushes and aromas of spice estates. River Kali cascades over rocks into calm pools posing a very serene and tranquil atmosphere. The hanging bridge constructed just opposite the falls provides a spectacular view of the falls for the tourists.

10. Courtallam Falls
Courtallam also called Spa Of South India as it is a cluster of nine falls and they all apparently have ayurvedic healing properties as their feeding streams pass through groves of naturally growing herbs. Public is allowed tobathe beneath the waterfalls. The three major waterfalls reachable by road are the Main Falls, Five Falls, and Old Courtallam Falls. Other waterfalls like Shenbaga Devi Falls and Honey Falls are reachable only by trekking on the mountain.  Height: 548 feet  River: Chittar River, Manimuthar River, Pachaiyar River and Tambaraparani River Location: Courtallam , Tamil Nadu
